This past weekend, I decided to try a new coffee shop with my dad. Saturdays are our time together, and exploring different coffee spots has become our thing. I was hesitant to try this new place because I’d planned on going to our usual spot—I liked it there. I knew exactly what I would order, and I was confident I’d enjoy it. But despite my resistance, I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried something new: an "upside-down latte." The name intrigued me, so I decided to give it a shot.
When my drink arrived, I was confused—all the cream and caramel had settled at the bottom. My first sip was bitter and unpleasant, no matter how hard I shook the cup. Finally, I grabbed a spoon and stirred everything together. Once mixed, the coffee tasted better than I could have imagined!
In life, just like coffee, the individual ingredients don’t always taste good on their own. Some moments are bitter, like the sharp taste of black coffee. Others are sweet and joyful, like caramel. But it’s the way all of it comes together that creates something magical. Without one, the other wouldn’t stand out as much.
This experience mirrored the phase of life I’m in right now. Life has been chaotic and busy, with change being a constant companion—especially over the past few months.
The second half of 2024 has been filled with excitement, new opportunities, and watching things come together—a complete contrast to the first six months of the year. Like that latte, these two chapters of my life have felt completely separate, almost like polar opposites. But when I took the time to stir the coffee, scraping the sides to mix everything together, everything blended into something sweet and beautiful.
Like the coffee, life doesn’t blend together on its own. It takes patience and effort to find balance, especially during the messy moments.
The more I reflect, the more I see how each change in my life is like adding a new ingredient to a complex recipe. Some ingredients are sweet, others are bitter, but they all come together to create something greater than the sum of their parts. Life’s transitions often feel messy and uncertain, but it’s in the stirring—the effort and patience—that everything starts to make sense.
Looking back, it feels like I blinked, and my whole life changed. The version of me from June wouldn’t recognize where I am in November, but that’s the beauty of growth—it happens gradually, until one day, you look back and realize just how far you’ve come.
